Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to get your diapers really clean.
Ah, but what does this really mean? It means having nothing left on the diaper but the fabric itself. This is the reason that you want a detergent without brighteners, scents, dyes or fabric softeners. All of these things are meant to leave a little trace on your fabrics. It's all well and good to have some optical brighteners and scents cling to your t-shirt. But when it clings to the fabric of a cloth diaper and then you add in urine on top of that, there are going to be problems. You should be able to stick your face right into a clean diaper from the dryer or line and smell nothing. If you still smell something, you need to rinse some more.
Cleaning your cloth diapers means that you need to get all traces of pee, poop, sweat, dirt, and detergent out of the fabric before you are done. If any of that stuff is left on the diaper you will find yourself with smell problems and possibly rash problems as well. bumGenius Odor Remover is a new way to help break down the stinkies before you even wash.
Since everyone has different skin, water, and washing machines, no one recommendation is perfect for all. It may take a little trial and error to figure out the right detergent and number of rinses for your hardness of water, sensitivity of skin, washing machine, and kind of diaper before you find the right combination for your family. You may still need to use a little bleach every now and then to help strip out the stubborn stuff but you certainly won't need it with every wash. There are also other ways to strip your diapers (remove detergent or rash cream build up) like Dawn dish soap.
Taking a clean load of diapers out of the dryer is one of the small joys in life for me. But maybe I am just really weird.

Oh geez, I am about to make the BIG switch for my 3 month old and I am scared now! I figured washing them could be all that hard . . . since I am addicted to things that make me a laundry pro :-)

Take a deep breath. You will do just fine! And you will also discover how awesome the power of just plain old WATER really is. Read up on detergents (links above) and follow the CottonBabies instructions (cold wash, warm wash, rinse again) and you will see that it is not really rocket science.
I have just started using cloth diapers- I am using the Bum genius 3.0's and have been washing with arm and hammer for sensitive skin. I notice a faint smell in some of my diapers and am planning on trying all free and clear instead. I see all free and clear military is recommended. What specifically is the military version and where can I find it??
Three weeks in to using them, following the wash instructions directly from Bum Genius dot com, using Charlie's soap (residue free!) and they stink like a freakin' sewer. Gotta say I'm missing my diaper service. Any suggestions?
Have you bleached at all? I'd do it. I had no luck with Charlies and went to Sport Wash instead.
I use Planet detergent and I love, like it says when it comes out it smeels like nothing. My trick is to fill the water all the way up no matter how many diapers i wash so they have plenty of room. If they are squishe after the rinse cysle then rinse again because all the dtergent is not out. Then i hang the diapers and put the liners in the wash and then when they are dry thrown in my diapers for 15 minutes and they are perfect. I have been using baby washcloths instead of flannel wipes and they work just as well. I tell evryone now to try it once and they will be hookes as thier is nothing gross about it. LOVE THEM!!
I have been using Bum Genius 2.0's for six months. I wash them in Purex Free and Clear in cold water, then hot wash with no detergent, plus an extra rinse (or two). After four months I needed to use bleach one time in the second wash as recommended on the Bum Genius website. Besides that, the diapers have stayed very clean and scent-free. I am definitely a fan of the Purex Free and Clear. My husband is in the military and he said he has no idea what the All Free and Clear Military is.
I have a 4 month old who I am diapering BumGenius 3.0s. I am still searching for the best washing plan. My challenge is I live overseas, so I can't get a free and clear detergent, don't have hot water in the washer, and I have a house helper to wash for me (which is great) but she hasn't always followed my instructions. My mother sent me some Dawn which I have used to strip them twice according to the instructions on BumGenius website. I did boil water to pour in the machine for this, but it's not very practical. After these 2 times of stripping, I am still having leaks. Water beads up on the diapers, so I know it's detergent build-up. I could easily get baking soda and vinegar, but I am afraid to use it since BG doesn't recommend it. Currently I am using Dawn to wash every time, but maybe I'm not using the right amount. Would bleach help the detergent build-up? Would baking soda or vinegar help? I would appreciate any advice!
