bumGenius 4.0 - Hook & Loop Details (UPDATED!)

We've received many questions today about what exactly what we changed about the hook & loop.

Our new hook & loop is made out of 100% polyester (the vast majority of hook & loop available in the United States is made of nylon).  It is flexible, softer, and stickier after washing.  I absolutely love it!

The photo to the right is a picture of the old laundry tabs and the new laundry tabs.  These stay soft and flexible over time while retaining their stickiness.

(sidenote:  in this photo you can also see the start/stop of the top stitching just above the laundry tab to accommodate for elastic accessibility.  Many families want to be able to use their diapers for another child.  This change makes it easy for those families to refresh their diapers for another baby if needed. )

In the photo below, the twilight diaper is a new bumGenius 4.0 and the ribbit diaper is a bumGenius 3.0.   Both diapers are unwashed.

I am still at the office, but tomorrow I'll add a photo to add of a diaper with the new hook and loop that has been used and washed for six months so you can see how it has held up over time.

Update 6/30/2010:

I've taken some additional photos of the diapers that I have been testing at home... these have been in use for about six months.  As you can see, you can tell they have been washed, but they don't show any of the wear and tear that we were seeing on previous versions of the diaper.

  5. Snaps are an option with the new 4.0 diapers. They're right here.

  7. I am glad that the new hook and loops are improved. I really enjoy mine but they are starting to fray.

  8. Thanks for the info, Jenn!

  9. Oooh, forgot to ask, can we get replacement front strips (landing strips I think they're called?) for our 2.0s and 3.0s? Are these included in the refresher kits or do those just contain the tabs?

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Carolyn, the refresher kids don't contain the landing zones - yet!

  11. It will be awesome if they were included in the future!

  12. Jenn, I have a question! I have some 3.0s that were made in Egypt, and some that were made in the USA. They have different types of laundry tabs. The Egypt ones have a softer, felt-like tab that shriveled up relatively quickly (after like, 3 weeks-ish?) and the USA made ones have a stiffer "loop" tab that has held up really well.

Is one of these the "new" hook and loop you're talking about on the 4.0s, or is that a different type altogether?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Colleen, it is a different thing altogether. The new hook and loop has not shipped to customers yet anywhere in the world.

  14. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for not completely doing away with the hook and loop option on your diapers. So many brands are switching completely to snaps it seems like, but my husband, mother, and the nursery staff that keep my daughter on Sundays really appreciate the h&l as opposed to snaps. It makes using my cloth so much easier for them! Thank you thank you thank you!

  15. I agree, I'm one of the few that really likes hook and loop and isn't a fan of snaps. I am really glad you kept it, and even better that you chose to improve it!

I don't understand how a new "landing zone" can be replaced, it's sewn into it's own barrier so there's no wick. How does the new design accommodate replacement?

    ReplyDelete
  18. How much do these refresher kits cost? And what is the "landing zone" ??

    ReplyDelete
  19. I just replaced about 30 hook & loops on all of my diapers last week in prep for new baby due in a few weeks. Sucks I didn't wait for the new softer ones....errrggghh

  20. They look great! Will your deluxe AIO's also have the new hook and loop?

I would also like to thank you for not doing away with the hook & loop & coming up with this great way to explain the difference with the new dipes. I loved the hook & loop. 2 years ago when I purchased mine, I knew of the issues with hook & loop so I made these things I called velcro mittens that I applied before the wash to keep them safe. It worked like a charm. I am so glad with the new ones I wouldn't have to do that. Also, in my household the snaps did NOT pass the husband test & my mom has arthritis so I completely agree with the ease of use the other mothers talked about. My children have always been very trim & the snaps were never gave the right fit. So again, thank you very much!!!!

  22. Will you be announcing when the refresher kits do include the landing zone? I have limited edition fleece inners and they desperately need some hook and loop love. I would like to refresh them all at once.

Jenn, can you tell me what happened to the disposable Flip inserts? Are you replacing them as well? They're gone from the CB website...

  24. THANK YOU BG for hook and loop!!! My squirmy boy already can't stand THAT haha. :) You are wonderful and keep up the good work!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll add my vote to the keeping the h&l - it's a big part of why we went with the 3.0 vs. other brands

    ReplyDelete
  26. Are the new hook and loop refresher kits available now or are those on pre-order, as well?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I also will thank you for not getting rid of the hook and loop closure. I totally agree with several people on here, my squirmy toddler doesn't stay still long enough for snaps. So thank you for not getting rid of them. Also I am expecting some refresher kits for my BG 3.0's and am excited for the new and improved. Baby #3 to use these and love them.

  28. In the last 6 months I recieved a new Zinna from Cotton Babies and I can tell the difference in the Velcro (It's stiffer and the laundry tabs are so much better!). The replacement kit I got for my other diapers was better too! Is this the same Velcro that will be on the 4.0s? If so I may have to get half of mine in the velcro option. Its so much better than the old stuff!

  29. So I have a question. I was thinking about attempting to convert my worn aplix to snaps but do really like the aplix for ease of use. Exactly what is covered under the warranty?? I've read the policy and am unclear. Is it covered if they are still functional but look awful and don't stay attached in the washer? I have never dried them so they aren't curled up or anything. Thanks!!!

  30. Thanks for this post. I was interested to learn more details of the H/L change, but will probably still order snaps. My velcro(12mths use) is still fine, but my little Munchkin LOVES taking it off...Grrr.

Thank goodness the hook and loop closure is improved. I found the hook and loop on previous Bumgenius diapers to be awful! It wore out so quickly even though I never put them in the dryer. It was the only bad thing about the diaper. Snaps are a wonderful new option!

  32. I guess I'm one of the few that think snaps are easier! For grandma and babysitters, I can tell them leave a 'demo diaper' with what snap settings to use and they won't make it way too tight or too loose like has happened with h&l. I still won't be buying any of the 4.0s because they have the same inner fabric...it's almost as waterproof as PUL lol. Can't wait for the new bright colours in the organics though :D

Ok that link with the alleged snaps doesn't work. Where can I see these snap 4.0s?

The photo has the butternut color in the snap version (yellow). To choose a snap diaper, click on the drop down menu under color and closure. Both hook and loop and snaps are available for each color.

I'm glad the h&l is improved. BumGenius is one of my 2 fave diapers! While I personally prefer snaps, the church nursery, babysitters, daddy, and grandparents all prefer h&l, so I make sure to have some available for them. I do have a question, though. I bought refresher kits from Kelly's Closet about 2ish months before this announcement. Is the h&l the old style or the newer style, and how can I tell?

  36. Thanks for the post! This is great.

  38. I have been buying the BG 4.0s for the past 5 months. So far there are 3 of my 31 diapers that the hook and loop no longer hold at the waist. The covers have always been line dried. I have been unable to find the refresher kit on the cottonbabies website...where should I be looking?
