One of the easiest ways to store dirty diapers at home is in a diaper pail placed in your nursery or near your changing table. A diaper pail seems like an easy enough thing, but we do have a few tips on selecting your diaper pail that may save you from stink and other issues down the road.

The first thing to consider when selecting a diaper pail is how much space you have available. Let's be honest, sometimes there's just no room for a pail, and that's when we suggest having a couple of larger wet bags for use around home. You can learn more about wet bags in our previous blog post. If you have the space for a pail, you want to think about not only the footprint of the pail, but also the height. Carefully consider where you are going to place the pail. Trust me, tripping over a diaper pail during a midnight diaper change is a sure way to wake the baby.
Next, let's consider the closure. We prefer diaper pails with lids because it helps to control any smell issues you may have before washing and also it helps keep any older children from "helping" with the diaper laundry. The most important thing to remember when storing dirty diapers is you need to have air flow.
We recommend using some type of vented pail, as the air flow will help prevent issues like mold in your diapers. Vented pails can be a little tricky to find in some stores, but we have one that we really love. It comes with a carbon filter to help keep smells at bay, and you can buy replacement filters too.
The final thing to consider when investing in a diaper pail is what type of liner you will use. Fabric liners are important because they help with air flow and they are washable and re-useable as well. We suggest a PUL or nylon pail liner that you can just wash with your cloth diaper laundry. We recommend washing it at least every other time you do your cloth diaper laundry or whenever the liner gets dirty. Or save yourself from wondering and just wash it each time with your diapers.
Of course, you are always welcome to find a type of diaper pail that fits your decor, space available or budget. Just keep in mind that selecting a diaper pail or wet bag that allows air flow will save you laundry time later and help prevent issues like stink or mold. What is your favorite way to store your dirty diapers? Do you have a diaper pail? What is an important feature to look for in a diaper pail?
I use large wet bags and just empty the diapers into the washer and the wet bag goes in every time, too. I have 2 large wet bags, and they have served me well for about 3 years now! They hang from my changing table and my 3 year old has not even tried to open the zipper on them, thankfully.
ReplyDeleteWe're cloth diapering on a tight budget, so I just use an old 5 gallon laundry detergent bucket lined with a grocery bag. It's functional and I can easily sanitize the bucket when needed.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion diapers are the basic need of every baby and if they are not made of good quality then they can harm your baby in many ways.So my suggestion is that you should use only those diapers which are best in the opinion of experts.
