Cloth 101: Outdoor drying

Sunny days, gentle breezes and warm weather are great for cloth diapers! Line drying your cloth diapers is a great way to remove stains, but also saves energy, which in turn can save you even more money on your utility bills.

You don't even have to have a traditional clothesline to take advantage of the natural resource. A folding drying rack is a great way to dry your diapers outdoors, especially if you have a small apartment balcony or deck. Get creative and hang a temporary clothesline between two trees outdoors or between the pillars that support your deck. You can even just lay your diapers across your outdoor chairs or table if you can't find a place to hang a line.

Just remember, don't leave your cloth diapers out in full sun and high temperatures too long. High outdoor temperatures can be just as harmful to your cloth diapers as high dryer heat can be. Check your diapers frequently and bring them inside once they are completely dry.

  1. I throw mine over the plastic play house outside as well as the lawn chairs. I just make sure it's not too windy. They dry really quickly.

  2. I love my folding drying rack! It fits right on my back landing and my diapers look and smell so nice and clean when they're dry

  3. I would love to dry my cloth diapers outside more often, but I find that when I do, they get all hard and starchy as compared to when I dry them in my drier. What am I doing wrong???

Jen, that tends too happen to me too. I usually throw my diapers in the dryer for 10-15 minutes after drying outside to soften them up.
I love drying outside in the summer and I use my folding rack in my house in the winter, which is from mid September to almost May. It helps with the humidity in the house.
