Cloth 101: bumGenius vs. Flip Inserts

Another frequently asked question we receive at Cotton Babies is
"What is the difference between bumGenius and Flip stay dry inserts?"

The answer is fairly simple, once you understand how each product is used.

Flip Stay Dry inserts are designed to touch baby's delicate skin. This means that both Flip One-Size Stay Dry and Newborn inserts have a layer of suede cloth on one side of the insert. This is the side that touches baby's skin when you put the diaper on. The other side is microfiber. Microfiber is very absorbent. However, for some people with sensitive skin, it can wick away too much moisture from the skin, leaving skin irritated. This is why we recommend using only Flip inserts with the suede cloth side up inside a Flip cover for your little one.

bumGenius inserts are designed to be used inside of a pocket diaper. Pocket diapers have a suede cloth inner layer that touches baby's bottom to wick the moisture away. This means that the bumGenius One-Size and Newborn/Diaper Doubler inserts are all microfiber. Because it is placed inside the pocket, the bumGenius insert never touches baby's skin directly.

We don't recommend interchanging these two inserts without some modifications.

You can use bumGenius One-Size or Newborn inserts in a Flip cover or other style of diaper cover if you use a Stay-Dry sock. This will add stay dry layer to protect your little one's sensitive skin.

Flip Stay Dry inserts are not generally recommended for use inside a pocket diaper. But if you are in a pinch and out of inserts, we suggest flipping the insert the opposite of the way you would use it inside a Flip cover. This means you would want to place the suede cloth side closest to the PUL outer cover inside the pocket. Two layers of suede cloth may lead to slower absorbency and possible leaks. By using the Flip insert in the opposite way, you may be able to prevent these issues.

  1. What type of insert would you use if you're using prefolds or fitted diapers for night time? and would you place them inside close to the skin or outside between the diaper and the cover? I CD my daughter but never overnight and hope to do all cloth w/my son who's due in Sept and just need advice for staying dry overnight.

    1. It really depends on how heavy of a wetter your little one is during the night. You may not need any additional inserts other than your prefold or fitted. If you do, you may want to choose something with a stay dry layer to put close to baby's bottom to help it stay dry to prevent irritation. However, some families prefer to use inserts that are wrapped in the middle of a prefold for overnight use. It may take a bit of experimenting to find out what works best for your little one, but that's normal. If we can help with personalized tips, feel free to give us a call at 1-888-332-2243 once your little one arrives.

Several people have said the flip organic inserts are great for overnight and are super-absorbent. Some people add a doubler, but some don't need it. My lo is not yet big enough or sleeping long enough, but I will be trying it out! With my older kids, we resorted to disposables overnight (leaked and/or wetness bothered them), but my goal is not to do that with this one.

  2. La Familia Crespo I was going to ask the same thing (& I'm also due with a boy in Sept). Also I remember looking somewhere at a liner that was thinner but had the same absobancy as most inserts, does anyone know what that is? I wish I had written it down. Also Since I'm mainly prefolding what is a good slim insert, I'm pretty sure we put them in the prefolds and I don't want it to be really bulky.

    1. Hi Nicole, hemp inserts are usually thinner but with a lot more absorbency and are something we recommend for overnights or heavy wetters.
