Cloth 101: How to wash your bumGenius Elemental

A few weeks ago we introduced you to the new bumGenius Elemental cloth diaper. Since many of you have purchased these diapers and may be expecting them to arrive in your mailbox soon, we are sharing our prepping and washing instructions for this cloth diaper.

To prepare your bumGenius Elemental before your first use, you will need to wash them in hot water 3-5 times, drying between each wash to remove all the natural oils found in cotton fabric. By removing these oils, you are actually making the cotton more absorbent. Even though we say you can use the diaper after these first 3-5 washes, your cloth diapers will continue to become more absorbent in the next several washings. Our bumGenius Elemental cloth diapers should be fully absorbent after 7-10 washes.

After you have used your bumGenius Elemental cloth diaper, we recommend the following laundry routine:

• Separate dark colors and wash separately.
• Pre-wash your cloth diapers cold.
• Wash hot with bumGenius or other cloth diaper safe laundry detergent.
• Rinse again.
• Line dry when possible. During winter and other times it may be difficult to get diapers dry in a few hours, tumble dry on medium heat.

Just like all our bumGenius, Flip and Econobum cloth diapers, we recommend using 1/4 cup of bleach once a month to sanitize your cloth diapers and remove stains.
